My letter to the Odessa City Council
Dear Odessa City Council,
I would appreciate if you would take the time to read this important report from the Texas Comptroller regarding the effect of growing local government debt, before casting your vote on a new tax rate:
In addition I have very strong concerns on many levels related to the increase in funding for the Odessa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. My concern stems from the fact that we as taxpayers are approaching $1 million dollars of “investment” over a period of almost 8 years with no return on taxpayer’s money. Now this year we are adding approximately $70,000 to their budget for the possibility of bringing in businesses from Chihuahua, Mexico. If my understanding is correct this has been dangled as a potential signed contract for a number of years.
More importantly I believe our city should clearly and boldly make a resolution that says we will NOT further any attempts to spread prosperity to Mexico until they become honest brokers with the United States in two vital areas. The first area is the return of our Marine Sargent Andrew Tahmooressi. If these potential businessmen want to expand their businesses to the U.S. (and consequently Odessa, TX) or have our businesses expand to Mexico then the injustice done to Andrew Tahmooressi should be corrected immediately, led by these potential businesses from Mexico. Secondly the City of Odessa should publicly declare that we as a City will not further assist in business development with Mexico as long as they continue to aid and abet their citizens and Central/South American people to illegally enter the U.S. (and consequently Odessa, TX).
You all took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution and the laws of the United States and Texas. By brokering these kinds of business arrangements you are complicit in breaking your oath of office and undermining our great country.
I ask for your very serious consideration in these matters.by
